Caelloi Motors

Caelloi Motors can trace its history back to 1851 and is almost certainly Britains oldest established coach and bus operator.

The founder, Tomos Huws, was given a donkey by a local farmer when bad health compelled him to give up his low-paid farm job. The object of the donkey was to set him up in business as a carrier and carriers were very much in demand in that era.

The trouble was that Tomos could not afford a cart. However, a kindly farmer gave him two wheels, and Tomos completed the project by nailing a few planks of wood and fixing a pair of shafts. That was how Caelloi started to serve the Lleyn Peninsula and North Wales.

The business was eventually taken over by Mr Huws daughter and her husband Thomas Jones. It was their son Thomas, better known to the people of Lleyn as Tomi Caelloi, who persuaded his parents to invest in a motor lorry, which was converted into a bus by means of a tarpaulin over the top, and the run from the home base in Dinas to Pwllheli became motorised.

Its operating base changed from Dinas to the West End Garage at Pwllheli in 1946. The West End Garage had a connection with transport dating back to the1900s when it was built by Solomon Andrews as a depot for the horse drawn trams that operated along the seafront to Llanbedrog.

In 1956 Tomi Caellois son Thomas Herbert and his wife Ellen ventured further afield by operating coach tours in the UK and Europe. This laid the foundation for the business as it is today following the decision to abandon the bus service from Dinas to Pwllheli in 1986.

Family tradition has carried on with Herbert and Ellens son Eryl and daughter Nerys working together as partners in the business.

In 2004 West End Garage was sold and Caelloi moved to a new depot at the Glan-y-Don Industrial Estate in Pwllheli.
