Richardsons Coaches

Before 1920, Thomas Richardson, genarally known as Tot, was a butchers boy. In that year, together with his brothers Arthur and Bill, he set himself up in the transport business. He started by buying a truck. Then his grandfather, John, not a member of the firm but a joiner in his own right, built a body to fit on the back of a truck to turn it into a charabanc. At their premises in Oxford Road Tot served the business as an engineer with Arthur and Bill doing the driving, deciding on destinations and advertising trips.

By 1949 business had increased so that further premises on Oxford Road were purchased. Temporary setbacks were experienced when shipyards closed but otherwise the company steadily grew.

Richardsons were very busy during the war years taking munitions factory hands to work and when air raids struck, the company's drivers would move its vehicles out of the yard and park them in different places around the town to minimise damage.
